Does Starbucks use the same coffee beans that you buy in the store?

I've noticed that whenever I get a cup of Coffee From Starbucks it almost always tastes bitter and burnt. I have read that this is because they roast their coffee beans at higher temperatures to roast them faster. Now this leads me to wonder if this is the same beans they sell in bags because I have tried the bagged coffee and it doesn't have the bitter and burnt taste. Perhaps it's the way I'm brewing it or maybe they roast the coffee beans at normal roasting temperatures for the bagged coffees?

They are the same beans, and it is true that Starbucks essentially burns their coffee beans when they roast them. Coffee beans should not be roasted past the second "pop," but Starbucks roasts theirs well past the second in order to give their coffee that distinguishing (ie., burnt) flavor. It's quite sad, really, that the farmers who grow and harvest those beans put in all that effort only to have their potentially Great Coffee ruined. That being said, the reason yours doesn't taste as strong when you brew it is most likely due to the fact that you don't have as high of a coffee to water ratio. Typically, when you brew coffee, the rule is 2 tablespoons to every 6 oz of water. So I imagine if you use this measurement, you might find that your home-brewed coffee is just as bitter and burnt.
